John Vink étudie la photographie à l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts de la Cambre en Belgique à la fin des années 1960. Il devient photographe indépendant en 1971. Par la suite, il rejoint l'agence VU en 1986, année où il est lauréat du prix Eugène SMITH pour un travail sur la gestion de l'eau au Sahel.
Le photoreporter John Vink détient de nombreuses histoires à raconter sur les pays dans lesquels il a voyagé et sur les situations dangereuses qu’il a vécues en Thaïlande, au Honduras, en Angola… la liste est infinie. Selon John Vink, les problèmes sont partout et la photographie peut en être le témoin privilégié. Entre 1987 et 1993, il réalise un travail sur les réfugiés du monde entier. Celui-ci sera prochainement exposé au Centre National de la Photographie (CNP) à Paris. Mais cette démarche ne l'empêche pas de penser que la photographie ne peut pas changer le monde.
Cependant l’attitude de John Vink nous conduit à la conclusion suivante : un photographe peut changer la vision du monde autant par son engagement social que par sa vision humanitaire. D’ailleurs, celle-ci est partagée par la plupart des photographes de l’agence Magnum, dont John Vink est membre depuis 1997.
Lors de sa dernière exposition à Paris, cet été 2007, à la galerie Jayavarman VII, il a présenté une série photographique autour de la boxe. Toutes les images sont en noir et blanc et ont été réalisées à Phnom Penh, au stade Borei Keila et au gymnase d’E. Phoutang, ancien champion du monde poids lourds.
John Vink est d’ailleurs un grand connaisseur du Cambodge. Il le visite depuis 1989 et y vit depuis 2000.
Cette ambiance particulière d’un sport aussi violent, pratiqué dans des conditions inhabituelles, John Vink a su l’immortaliser avec intimité et sensibilité. Il a réussi à s’intégrer à tous les moments de la vie de ces athlètes du bout du monde.
Les jeunes garçons s’entrainent devant l’objectif de John Vink à une forme particulière de boxe communément admise comme thaïlandaise mais qui trouve en réalité ses racines dans l’empire khmer.
C’est afin de commémorer cette culture que John Vink a décidé d’exposer dans un endroit très particulier qui présente l’art du Cambodge, la galerie Jayavarman VII, en plein centre de Paris. Elle accueille des œuvres de grande qualité à côté des photographies d’une ambiance extrême.
