It's always gratifying to meet great artists. With Photographer Douglas Kirkland we shared some quite delicious moments.
Meet a living legend of contemporary photography!
We cannot think of Douglas Kirkland without also taking in the spirit of Françoise, his wife. The two of them form one irresistible binomial of simplicity and human warmth.
We caught up with Douglas Kirkland and Françoise Kirkland in Los Angeles, and I was lucky for this opportunity to share a little of their time. Travelers of the world, they welcome their friends with openness and a freshness so for us to make this documentary on Douglas Kirkland was a fascinating time.
It is necessary to digest the fact that Douglas Kirkland has worked in photography since the age of 14 and that now in 2008 he is over 70 years young. With the same passion, the same enthusiasm and his ever present eye he immortalizes the Hollywood celebrities. Taking part mostly in blockbusters he travels around the world to shoot the icons of today. Having a Minister's schedule, he was with Monica Belluci for a very glamorous session in Portugal, just a few days ago.
The strength of the photographic style of Douglas Kirkland is the way that he can capture and present the emotion of the moment. He has this unique know-how which has allowed him to etch visual moments into our collective subconscious, thus marking us all.
Imagine meeting Marylin Monroe, Gene Kelly, Judy Garland... Look at these images taken during the creations of Thriller, Titanic, and 2001 a Space Odyssey. Relive the magic moments of Out of Africa with the poster image for the film that won an Oscar.
I think of having only touched the surface of the Douglas Kirkland experience when I think about his black and white photos from the 1950s in New York. A real news photographer, he went through New York seizing atmospheres and current events. The style is there, the photographic control is absolved.
Photographer for Look and Life Magazines, published all over the world, his life is marked with surprising and intimate meetings. His latest book which has just been released a few weeks ago in the United States, shares the rare intensity of Douglas' time spent with Coco Chanel. On the new film by Baz Lurhmann, Australia, Douglas finds himself in another collaboration as prolific as that of Moulin Rouge : Nicole Kidmann still in the lead and a most exciting photographic series covering this cinematic epic.
For the real photo fan of cinema, we invite you to rediscover the book 'Freeze Frame' with published photographs from hundreds of films that he has covered like Titanic, Moulin Rouge, Tora Tora Tora, The Sound of Music, Out of Africa, Romancing the Stone, Behind Enemy Lines,... And unique portraits of celebrities like Paul Newman, Francis Ford Coppola, Warren Beatty, Donald Sutherland, Jeanne Moreau, John Wayne, Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford, Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, Mel Brooks, Anne Bancroft, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Drew Barrymore, Shirley MacLaine, Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Sidney Poitier, Arnold Schwarzenegger; Ewan McGregor, Renée Zellweger, Jessica Alba, Gene Hackman and Owen Wilson!!! Just to name a few.
Far from the sequins and rhinestones, Douglas Kirkland keeps the sincerity of his origins and with Françoise, today they work to share his photographic work as widely as possible.
I invite you to watch the first part of 'Living Legend' the documentary that we have dedicated to Douglas and you will be privileged to live some of these magic moments with him.
Thanks to Douglas and to Françoise for the time they have given us!
